YOUR WORD IS A LAMP

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

No longer do we walk in darkness
No longer do we walk in darkness
No longer do we walk in darkness

For you have called us out of darkness
    into your marvelous light
We turn our backs on what is wrong
and choose to do what's right

Your blood is flowing through my veins
to cleanse until all that remains
is clay that's molded through the pains of life

Your Spirit blows into these bones
to claim this temple as its home
and starts a fire that soon becomes a blaze

EVEN THE MOUNTAINS

We praise you Lord because you're worthy
You are Lord and King of the earth and sky
Let us lift you up and declare your glory
Let us lift our hands and our voices high

Even the mountains praise your name
the rocks and the stones cry Holy!
Whoever seeks for your face
     will never be the same
Let your kingdom come
     in Jesus' name

I'm an instrument, I am only a vessel
Help me open up to receive your love
Let us put to death thoughts of opposition
Let me step aside and point the world to above

WITH ALL THAT I AM

I praise you Lord
I praise you Lord

With all of my heart
With all of my soul
With all of my strength
I praise you Lord

For there is nobody like you
    in heaven or on earth
Who is worthy to receive
    all my praise
And I praise you with all that I am
Yes I praise you with all that I am

I'll serve you Lord
I'll serve you Lord

With all of my heart
With all of my soul
With all of my strength
I'll serve you Lord

For there is nobody like you
    in heaven or on earth
Who is worthy to receive
    all my praise
And I'll serve you with all that I am
Yes I'll serve you with all that I am

I love you Lord and
I'll love you Lord

With all of my heart
With all of my soul
With all of my strength
I love you Lord

For there is nobody like you
    in heaven or on earth
Who is worthy to receive
    all my praise
And I love you with all that I am
Yes I love you with all that I am

Today's message is titled, "Angels, Demons, and the Name of Jesus." And today we're going to turn to our compas, our guidebook, our spiritual map, the Holy Scriptures, to give us direction through the often-confusing sea of spiritual experiences we see all around us. And with the light of God's Word made alive to us by the Holy Spirit who has come to lead us into truth, I believe we will be saved from the deceptions that are so prevalant today.

Throughout Scripture, we see God's hand as he moves through dreams, visions, prophets, and angelic visitations. We also see satan's hand as he moves through dreams, visions, false prophets, and demonic manifestations, often appearing as an angel of light.

And as we turn to the Word of God as our standard of truth, comparing what we see around us today with the unfailing Word of God, I ask that the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit of God, would open our eyes and reveal the truth to us.

And I will point out from the very beginning that I am NOT calling on some sort of angel to deliver prophecy, or on any other created being to give us power from heaven. Jesus said that he would send his Holy Spirit to lead us into truth, not angels of prophecy or any other created being.

So come, Holy Spirit, we ask you to reveal the truth to us, showing us what does and does not agree with the Holy Scriptures, so that we can stay firm and unshaken on the path you have set before us.

Now, I realize we've talked quite a bit about deception, but it's important that we hold up the banner of truth and expose the things satan uses to hoodwink the Church.

The Bible tells us to have nothing to do with the works of darkness, but to expose them. My purpose here today is not to name names except for the name of Jesus, and not to point out ministries except for the ministry of Jesus by his Holy Spirit.

That's not to say I won't name a name, but our focus must remain clear -- while exposing the darkness, it's important that we keep our eyes on the light. We're not on a witch hunt, rather we're on a truth hunt, and we seek after the Spirit of the Living God, as he cleanses and purifies us, making us smaller in our eyes while magnifying and exalting the name of Jesus.

Let's lay our foundation with the Word of God, and read from Second Thessalonians chapter two, verses one through four.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-4

1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you,
2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come.
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,
4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

We see here that there will be a great falling away before Jesus returns. And the one referred to in this chapter as "the lawless one" will not destroy the temple, but will sit as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

This tells us that, as always, even before he was kicked out of heaven, satan is a big fraud, an imposter. He has the biggest case of God envy in the history of creation, and he'd rather spend eternity in hell than to humble himself as the creation, rather than the false creator.

So what do you think his response would be to seeing the Holy Spirit move mightily as he did in the day of Penticost, and in the early church, and in many groups of believers all over the world today?

Sure, he will try to destroy it, because he hates it. It competes with his delusional self-image as God. But he also envies the moving of the Spirit of God. And he will often appear as an angel of light, sitting in the temple of God and showing signs and wonders to declare that he IS God.

Skipping down to verse nine, we read this: "The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders."

So satan will not just spread false doctrine. No, he will deceive with power, signs, and lying wonders. And to what end? Oh, it's nothing new for him. The power, signs, and lying wonders will give creedance to falsehoods, and are designed to take people's eyes off of Jesus, and turn them instead, ultimately, to satan, as he sits in the temple of God and declares that he is God.

In Second Corinthians 11, starting with verse 12, we read this:

2 Corinthians 11:12-15

12 But what I do (this is Paul speaking about personally paying all the costs of his own ministry), I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast.
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

So we see here that satan transforms himself into an angel of light, and his ministers will do the same thing.

Suppose that I were to stop the service and declare to you,

"I see an angel! She is radiant and glowing, emitting brilliant light and colors, and floating across the floor!

She is sprinkling sparkles of revelation and prosperity on you; yes, this angel is giving you revelation!

Her name is Rachel. And the Lord has just told me to prophecy to you that Rachel has showed up in this service!"

Well, I hope that you would get up and head for the door. For me to stop proclaiming the Word of God and pointing to Jesus, and instead give glory to an angel who appears as a fantastic being in pomp and circumstance, dispersing wisdom and revelation, and then to tell you that God wants me to proclaim, "Rachel the great angel is here!"... I hope you would recognize that as not of God.

Throughout Scripture, angels of God would always make certain the people did not worship them, and that they delivered their message and left. They did not dispense riches and esoteric knowledge, but pointed back to the one who sent them, refusing to accept the spotlight.

Well, I want to read a quote from a present-day minister. Some of you may know immediately who this is, others will have no idea. But I hope and pray that before we leave here today, you will have seen that this does not line up with the examples given us in the Word of God.

And I quote:

"Now let me talk about an angelic experience with Emma. Twice Bob Jones asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: 'Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?' He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Surprised, I said, 'Bob, who is Emma?' He told me that Emma was the angel that helped birth and start the whole prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s. She was a mothering-type angel that helped nurture the prophetic as it broke out."

This person goes on to say,

"Within a few weeks of Bob asking me about Emma, I was in a service in Beulah, North Dakota. In the middle of the service I was in conversation with Ivan and another person when in walks Emma. As I stared at the angel with open eyes, the Lord said, 'Here’s Emma.' I’m not kidding. She floated a couple of inches off the floor. It was almost like Kathryn Khulman in those old videos when she wore a white dress and looked like she was gliding across the platform. Emma appeared beautiful and young-about 22 years old-but she was old at the same time. She seemed to carry the wisdom, virtue and grace of Proverbs 31 on her life."

I hope this is sounding an alarm in you, brothers and sisters. He goes on to say,

"She glided into the room, emitting brilliant light and colors. Emma carried these bags and began pulling gold out of them. Then, as she walked up and down the aisles of the church, she began putting gold dust on people. 'God, what is happening?' I asked. The Lord answered: 'She is releasing the gold, which is both the revelation and the financial breakthrough that I am bringing into this church. I want you to prophecy that Emma showed up in this service-the same angel that appeared in Kansas city-as a sign that I am endorsing and releasing a prophetic spirit in the church.'"

What? God wanted him to announce that Emma has come to give them revelation and prosperity? You've got to be kidding!

He goes on with his story... He says,

"See, when angels come, they always come for a reason; we need to actually ask God what the purpose is. Within three weeks of that visitation, the church had given me the biggest offering I had ever received to that point in my ministry. Thousands of dollars! Thousands! Even though the entire community consisted of only three thousand people, weeks after I left the church the pastor testified that the church offerings had either doubled or tripled…"

And he concludes by saying this...

"I believe Emma released a financial and prophetic anointing in that place. That was the first angel that I have ever seen in the form of a woman. Some angels I’ve seen seemed like they were neither male nor female. However, Emma appeared as a woman who was like a Deborah, like a mother in Zion. When she came, she began to mentor, nurture and opened up a prophetic well. The people in the church began having trances and visions and the pastor began getting words of knowledge and moving in healing. That congregation also saw more financial breakthrough than they had ever seen before."

Yes, you heard right. Thanks to the great and glorious Emma, revelation, prophecy, and prosperity came to the church. He might as well have ended by saying, "Praise be to Emma!"

(And I'd like to point out here, they didn't say anything about more people coming to Jesus.)

In Second Corinthians 11:3-4, Paul says this:

3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted -- you may well put up with it!

Paul is saying that he fears the church will put up with someone corrupting their minds from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Keeping that in mind, let's listen to a short clip of the minister who told about Emma.

*** CLIP TEXT: "You know, I told the Lord, 'Why can't I just move in healing and forget talking about all that other stuff?' He said, 'Because, Todd, you've got to get the people to believe in the angel.' I said, 'God, why do I want to get people to believe in the angel? Isn't it about getting the people to believe in Jesus?' He said, 'The people already believe in Jesus, but the church doesn't believe in the supernatural.'" ***

So God was, in essence, supposedly telling this minister to corrupt the minds of the people from the simplicity that is in Christ, because they already believe Christ -- they need to believe in "the angel."

Brothers and sisters, don't be deceived by signs and wonders. Yes, God most certainly does heal today. But just because there are healings and the name of Jesus is mentioned, doesn't mean that God is behind it. It just might be an angel. An "angel of light," a demon, as satan seeks to sit in God's temple, declaring himself to be God.

Paul says this in 1 Corintians 1:22-24 and 2:2-5:

1 Corinthians 1:22-24

22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;
23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,
24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

So who is the power of God? Jesus!
And who is the wisdom of God? Jesus!

Not Emma. Not some angel dispensing revelation and riches. But Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb of God!

1 Corinthians 2:2-5

2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

So when this minister says that the Church doesn't need to hear about Jesus, but the Church instead needs to believe in "the angel," this is in opposition to the Holy Scriptures. For we see that Jesus Christ IS the power of God, and Jesus Christ IS the wisdom of God; and by the preaching of Jesus Christ and him crucified, the Spirit and the power of God were demonstrated, so that the faith of the people would not be in the wisdom of men, or I might add the power of angels, but in the power of God.

Now, this minister claims that the source of his power comes frp, an angel who will often stand by the pulpit where he speaks. He says this angel sometimes appears as a golden-white light moving about in the crowd, working healings. Others have even reported seeing this light.

Do angels of God heal? Do they give out wisdom and revelation?

Well, let's see what God says about it. Let's turn to 1 Corinthians 12, starting with verse 4:

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom (listen to this) through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings (by whom) by the same Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Now this word "Spirit" is not a lowercase "spirit", as in "the discerning of spirits," but is an uppercase "Spirit," as in "The Holy Spirit of God."

Who is it who gives the word of knowledge and of wisdom? Is it an angel? Absolutely not! The Bible makes it clear that it is the Holy Spirit of God, and none other!

And who is it who gives the gifts of healings and the working of miracles? Is it an angel? Absolutely not! The Bible once again makes it clear that it is the Holy Spirit of God, and no one else!

So my friends, if you ever see someone calling down angels to heal and prosper people, or if you see a ministry in which angels are healing people and working miracles, RUN AWAY!!!

Because if only the Holy Spirit delivers God's healing and God's wisdom and God's miracles, then any angel who comes doing those things is NOT an angel of God, but a fallen angel. When you see an angel going around doing these things, you are seeing the workings of demons.

In Mark 16:17-18, Jesus says this:

Mark 16:17-18

17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Beloved, it's not through an angel or through an affirmation or through some sort of freaky and unknown power that moves around in a golden-white light that the power of God comes to heal, deliver, and transform; no, it is in the name of Jesus that we cast out demons, in the name of Jesus that we speak with new tongues, in the name of Jesus that we could be bitten by a deadly serpant and live, in the name of Jesus that if we are poisoned we can be unhurt, in the name of Jesus that we lay hands on the sick, and it's in the name of Jesus that they will recover!

So how can we know that healings and miracles are of God? Let's read the next two verses of Mark 16, verses 19 and 20:

19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

They didn't go around with angels who healed people. No, they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed the preaching of the word with signs following.

Is the Gospel of Jesus Christ being clearly and accurately preached? Is the Word of God being proclaimed accurately and boldly, as the absolute firm foundation, the only ground solid enough for us to stand?

If so, and if in the name of Jesus demons are cast out, and in the name of Jesus the sick are healed, and Jesus and the Word of God are always THE focus of attention, then you're probably witnessing a moving of the Holy Spirit.

But if someone goes around talking about angels, and calls down angels to bring healing, and calls down angels to bring prosperity, and proclaims that God told them not to focus on Jesus but to get the people to believe in the angel, then it's safe to conclude you are witnessing a moving of demons, masquerading as angels of light.

And what is the Gospel? The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news of what Jesus did for us on the cross. We were dead in our trespasses and sins, every single one of us, for "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

And since all of us have sinned, we are in a hopeless condition, for "the wages of sin is death." But "God demonstrates His own love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" And through this sacrifice, Jesus dying in our place, even though the wages of sin is death, "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

And "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."

And it's all because "God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes upon him shall not perish, but have everlasting life!"

Do you believe upon Jesus today? Is he your Lord? Do you trust in him alone, the only way to God, and do you trust upon his Word?

Don't be led astray from the simplicity which is in Christ. There are many false prophets, many false signs and wonders, but there is only one true Gospel, only one true faith, and only one true Spirit who heals, delivers, and sets the captives free!

So come to Jesus, and surrender yourself to the way, the truth, and the life, the only way to the Father, and the only one worthy of our worship and adoration.

In closing, I'd like to mention a place called Bethesda, a place in the Bible we see an angel actually being involved in healing. Let's read this from John 5:1-18:

John 5:2-18

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.
5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?"

7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me."

8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed and walk."
9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

Now, this simply says an angel went down, and whoever stepped in first was healed. This doesn't even say whether the angel was of God or of satan, and we don't know what could have been given creedence to by this angel's work.

But Jesus didn't even acknowledge the pool or the angel or the one person who would be healed out of all those who waited and waited, and who only saw those more able or with more help get healed, while they remained sick, ignored by an impersonal spiritual being who had an unknown agenda.

Do you sometimes feel like this? As though you are being ignored? As though somehow you are getting passed by?

No, Jesus didn't even mention the pool or the angel. Instead, he went over to the man, knowing that he had been in that condition for a long time. And Jesus said to him, "Do you want to be made well?"

Perhaps he is asking you the same question today. "Do you want to be made well?"

The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me."

Maybe you feel as though you stand by helplessly watching God move in other people's lives, but you remain dry and needy, endlessly waiting for something that never comes.

Well, that something has come to you today, and his name is Jesus. No angel can meet your deepest need. No teaching can give you true insight. No religion can make you right with God. It is Jesus, and Jesus alone, who is everything you could ever need, and more than your heart could ever long for.

So Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed, and walk!" And immediately the man was made well, and took up his bed, and walked.

The ministry team can come to the front now.

When Jesus speaks the word, you don't have to wait for a stirring in a pool, or for some demon posing as God to heal you. No, when Jesus speaks the word, all heaven and earth must immediately obey.

So don't waste your time chasing after angels or revelations or signs and wonders. Instead, run after Jesus, embracing his Spirit and his Word, listening for his voice, and obeying whatever he says, and whether it seems small and barely perceptible, or it seems grand and unbelievably miraculous, as long as your eyes are upon Jesus and you are living by his Word alone, you will be saved from deception, and his voice will continue speaking into your greatest storm, "Peace! Be still!"

This altar is open for prayer and ministry. Get out of your seat and let's gather at the front, and seek after God together.

If you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you have heard the Gospel here today. The truth is that without Jesus, you are in a hopeless condition, heading for eternal punishment for your sins in hell. And the Good News is that Jesus died in your place, taking your sins upon him, so that if you believe upon him as your Lord, you will receive the gift of eternal life!

So come to Jesus right now. And let him speak peace and healing into your life right now. Just talk with him. Surrender to him. Ask him to forgive you and wash you clean. And you will never be the same again!

If you want to give your life to Jesus or need prayer or ministry, you can instant message someone on the ministry team.

If you need to go, you're free to do so, but I hope you'll stay, and you're invited to join us in the fellowship room to your left for a time of fellowship after the altar ministry. If you're a visitor or want to know more about Jesus, please feel free to join us.

Come.
