I won't let this moment pass
    and go my way again
How can I keep silent
and hold from you my praise
Lord I give my heart away

"Spoken Over You"

I can't speak for you, but in my own life, I've tended to lose sight of the callings God has placed on my life. I've been completely distracted by the cares and responsibilities of earning a living, paying the bills, and trying to find a little time to relax and unwind.

And while those things are good, I think most of us all but forget that God has plans for us, he has a job for us to do, and he has a specific and unique calling on YOUR life, special gifts and abilities, however developed or forgotten they might be, and certain spiritual gifts in which he has ordained for you to operate.

If you've been here for very long, you've heard Psalm chapter 139 on a number of occasions. But let's read verses 13 and 16 again.

Psalm chapter 139, verses 13 and 16:

 13 You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.

16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
         The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

Now if you're reading from the King James Version, the last part of verse 16 reads, "in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them," so it sounds more as though he had already planned your form, seeing it while you were still unformed, those parts which were continually being fashion.

In the original Hebrew, some words are left out, for their meaning would have been understood. Basically it says, "(Your) eye saw embryo, book written days fashioned one." So it was the job of the translators to fill in the blanks.

Certainly God sees your finished form even before the point of conception, and he knows what you will look like as you are being lovingly formed in your mother's womb.

But let's take a look at several other accurate translations so we can make sure we're heading in the right direction here.

NKJV: "In Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."

NIV: "All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

NAS: "In Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. "

So the general concensus among the translators is that this verse is saying God had written all the days that he ordained for us before the very first day.

This isn't to say that the KJV contains doctrinal error, that is absolutely not the case; and in this verse, it is absolutely true that God saw our finished form before we had any form at all. It is also true that he sees the finished form of our life before we live a single day, and just as our parts are formed in the womb, so our days are formed in the womb of time, cumulatively shaping our final form.

And this is the aspect of this verse I'd like for us to consider today, that God wrote our days, he ordained them, he put within us that which would point those days in the direction he ordained for us to go.

From the moment of conception, and I believe way before that, God put in motion your gifts, your callings, and the makeup of your personality, all designed to equip you to fulfill the calling he has placed upon your life from the very first day.

Have you ever had someone speak prophetically over you? When I was very young, a man of God spoke some things over me prophetically, and those things have proven to be in line with those things that God has placed within me. Of course I don't believe those words were the cause of my gifts and callings, but were simply articulations of what God had already written.

Do you realize today that God has written that which should be spoken over you?

There's lots of power in the spoken word. If we have a copy of the Bible that just sits on the shelf and never is read, it's just another book and won't have any effect on our lives.

If we take that book off the shelf and begin to read it, then it starts to flow into us like seeds into the ground.

And as our heart is filled with the Word of God, we will speak it. We won't be able to help speaking it out. After all, the Bible tells us that "out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."

If you never speak the Word of God, then you have a serious deficiency in it. And reading it and hearing it aloud will be a great help in satisfying that desperate spiritual need.

The same holds true for that which God has written about YOU, about your days, about your callings, about those things he has gifted and called you to do.

If a child is told over and over again, "You're stupid, you're worthless, you'll never amount to anything," then those words can cripple the child inside. Words like that come from the inner writings of the flesh.

Of course these inner writings may also say, "You're magnificent, you're better than the rest, you deserve praise and respect." But any words about you that are not the words God has written are not true.

God has not written a partial book about you. No, he has written EVERYTHING. Every nuance. Every tiny little detail. Nothing has been left out. He has been exhaustively thorough in his account of you.

Of course everything we do doesn't follow the path he has ordained for us to walk. And that's why it's important that we fill ourselves with the Holy Scriptures and speak them aloud to ourselves and to others, for everything that God has written in his invisible book about you will agree 100% with what God has written through others in the Scriptures. And the more your mind is renewed by his Word, the more you will recognize what in your life is of God, and what callings he has placed upon your life.

In the book of Ephesians, we read about the various ministries in which believers walk. Let's read this from Ephesians chapter 4, beginning with verse 11.

Ephesians 4:11-16

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,
15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head -- Christ --
16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

So we see the five-fold ministry of the Spirit outlined here:

Apostles
Prophets
Evangelists
Pastors
Teachers

And then it goes on to say that this is for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ. The end result is that we should all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, perfect and complete, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Verse 16 says that the whole body is joined and knit together by what each joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causing growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

This sounds an aweful lot like our passage in the Psalms, doesn't it? ...as our parts are being fashioned in continuance, and as his plan ordained for each day of our lives is already written from the very beginning.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 12, we read about the various gifts of the Spirit. And while these spiritual gifts are not necessarily the same as other giftings, they are meant to work together to enable you to fulfill the callings God has placed on your life.

Let's read about these in 1 Corinthians 12, verses 4 through 11.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

This goes on to talk about every activity working for the good of the whole body, as we grow together and mature. Once again, God sees the end from the very beginning. He has an order in which he has ordained for us to walk, as we are fashioned in continuity, every day's transformation and growth written from the very beginning.

The gifts mentioned here are these:

The word of wisdom
The word of knowledge
Faith
Gifts of healing
Miracles
Prophecy
Discerning of spirits
Tongues
Interpretation of tongues

These gifts are brought to life by the Holy Spirit to those who have been filled with the Spirit. If you have not had that filling with the Spirit after being born again, seek for it until you know you have it. And you'll know. The Holy Spirit doesn't sneak in. He is inside of you when you're born again, and wants to fill you to overflowing so you can walk in the gifts of the Spirit. Joined with the giftings God has placed within you from your mother's womb, these gifts of the Spirit will enable you to become a highly effective part of the body of Christ, walking in the ways God has ordained for you. You will be able to fulfill your callings.

Do you realize that healing and prophecy can flow through music and singing? Or the word of wisdom can operate through opening your mouth and saying something to someone, even though you might not know why?

Perhaps you're gifted in writing, in speaking, in singing, in compassion, in caring, in helping others, in working hard, in giving a listening ear, or in lending a shoulder on which a troubled heart can cry.

God has most certainly given you gifts. God most definitely has a calling upon your life. He has written it from the very beginning. And it's time to start speaking his Word, and accepting words spoken over you only when they agree with Scripture and with the gifts, dreams, and Godly desires he has placed within you.

We all have dreams. As kids, we might have dreamed of going to the moon, or being the president, or of being a great explorer, and the interest in many of those things we wanted to do as a child has passed with time. But I believe there were things, giftings, which we still have today, callings that showed up even then, and even though they might be burried under disappointment and disillusionment, they are still inside of us today.

These desires may very well be put there by God. They may very well spring from that which God has written about you concerning those things he has ordained for you to do.

Now, I'm not going to waste your time or mine with a series of psychological steps to take to uncover your inner giftings. And I really don't think that's necessary.

As you fill yourself with the Word of God, speak the Word of God, and live by the Word of God; as you seek to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit and allow God to use you through spiritual gifts; as you spend time fellowshipping with God daily in prayer, worship, Bible reading, and seeking to please him with all you do, then the nature God has placed within you, his giftings and callings on your life, will start to come to the surface.

If we seek the mind of man to discover what we should do, our flesh and the enemy will be glad to tell us part of the truth and lead us down a diversionary path. But if we seek the mind of God to discover what he wants us to do and for the gifts he has placed within us for the purpose of bringing glory to his name, then he will take great delight in bringing those things to life within us.

So I would like to encourage you today to not just float through life without any clear sense of purpose and calling. God didn't place you here to float through life. Rather, he wrote every day of your life, all the things he has ordained for you to do and become. He saw and determined before hand how you should grow, and how you should connect with the rest of the body to use your gifts to bring glory to his name.

And when he speaks over you through his Word, when he speaks over you through the mouths of others, and when he speaks over you through dreams and desires, grab on to that word and take it to heart. If it agrees with his Word and it agrees with that which he has written and ordained for your life, then it is a word of prophecy, the voice of God calling you to become what he has ordained for you to be.

And it doesn't matter what your circumstances are. It doesn't matter how the economy is. It doesn't matter what others might say who would discourage you from doing what you know God has called you to do. Hold on to the word of the Lord, and do everything for the glory of God.

What does the Scriptures tell us in Psalm 37:4 and 5? "Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass."

If you listen to the voices that say it's impossible, you can't do that, you will only fail, you will only make a fool of yourself, everyone is going to think you're stupid for trying; if you listen to all these other voices, then you will not walk in the ways God has ordained for you from the very beginning.

But if you listen to the voice that says "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," "I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ my Lord," and "whatever God has placed within me to do, he will enable me to do it as I trust in him and seek to obey and glorify him in all I do," then you will discover and walk in the ways God has ordained for you from the foundations of the earth.

The day God made you was a very good day. He took great delight in writing the days he had ordained for you. He smiled as he wrote every intimate detail of the gifts he would place within you. He had great joy as he wrote about the times you would stand strong regardless of what others said about you, and would believe HIS Word instead.

God has never orchestrated a horror story or a tradgedy -- these things come about when mankind tries to re-write what God has already written. Instead, when God penned your story, he orchestrated a masterpiece, a beautiful, glorious work of art.

Yes, you are only dust. Yes, all your own works are filthy rags. Yes, your heart is deceitful and will lead you astray if you let it. But that is part of the beauty in God's symphony. For God and God alone can take an old dried up piece of wood and shape it, sand it, form it, and mold it until it becomes a beautiful work of art; only God can place upon it the strings of righteousness, holiness, compassion, longsuffering, forgiveness, and grace, tuning each one until it is in perfect harmony with his Word and his ways; and only God can then pick up that intrument he has fashioned from those who have surrendered to him, and play the notes of the masterpiece he has composed; a willing vessel in the hands of the master, shaped and sanded, stringed and tuned, and cradled in his arms as he lovingly displays his awesome glory through the gifts and callings he has placed within us from the very first day.

The ministry team can come to the front now, and I'd like to open this altar for a time of ministry and prayer.

If you haven't given your life to Jesus and accepted him as your Lord and Savior, I'd like to invite you to do so right now. You're not promised tomorrow, but he's calling you today.

Just answer his call today, in your own words, asking forgiveness for your sins as you turn from them, and asking him to wash those sins away and make you a part of his family.

If you would like someone to speak or pray with you, or if you want to give your life to Jesus, you can instant message someone on the ministry team.

When you need to go, you're free to do so, and you're all invited to join us in the room to your left for a time of fellowship in a few minutes.
