Public Prayer Requests:

IN NEED OF PRAYER FOR FINANCES FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MYSELF. FELL BEHIND IN RENT WHEN I BECAME UNEMPLOYED NOW WE'RE PRACTICALLY PENNILESS.I SUFFER A BRAIN DISABILITY,I'M SO SCARED,
   –JOY

I have posted many prayer requests regarding my cat and my grief. One last request, I got a call from a Pennsylvania senator-who I emailed-and they are going to try to get her back for me. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, or to bargain with God-that never works, but it is hard. I'm asking my friends not to cross fingers, but to fold hands that God's will be done. If I don't get her back, I need to not let my faith waver but to trust her to Him.

I need prayer for my son, he has aspergers and is really struggling in math-to the point of lying to me about his homework. I need guidance and wisdom to help him. I also pray that this trouble would drive me into His arms, and not away from Him.

THERE IS A RIVER

There is a river whose streams
make glad the city of our God
There is a river whose streams
make glad the city of our God

I will rejoice, I will rejoice
     and be glad
I will rejoice, I will rejoice
     and be glad

There is a fountain full of grace
and if flows from Emmanuel's veins
It came and it healed me, it came and refreshed me,
It came and it washed my sins away!

TAKE ME IN TO THE HOLY OF HOLIES

Take me into the Holy of Holies
take me in by the Blood of the Lamb
Take me into the Holy of Holies
take the coal, touch my lips, here I am

Take me past the outer courts
     into the Holy Place
Past the brazen altar
Lord, I want to see your face
Pass me by the crowds of people
and the priests who sing your praise
I hunger and thirst for your righteousness
and it's only found one place

ON CHRIST THE SOLID ROCK I STAND

Verse 1:
My hope is built on nothing less
     than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
but wholely lean on Jesus' name

Verse 2:
When darkness fails his lovely face
I rest on his unchanging grace
in every high and stormy gale
my anchor holds withing the veil

Verse 3
When he shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
faultless to stand before his throne

Chorus:
On Christ the solid rock I stand
all other ground is sinking sand
all other ground is sinking sand

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

Verse 1:
On a hill far away
     stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame

And I love that old cross
where the dearest and the best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

Verse 2:
O that old rugged cross
     so despised by the world
Has a wonderous attraction for me

For the dear Lamb of God
     left his glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary

Verse 3:
In that old rugged cross
     stained with blood so divine
A wonderous beauty I see

For it was on that old cross
     Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me

Verse 4:
To the old rugged cross
     I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear

Then he'll call me some day
     to my home far away
Where his glory forever I'll share

Chorus:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross
'til my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
and exchange it some day for a crown

I STAND IN AWE OF YOU

You are beautiful beyond description
     too marvelous for words
Too wonderful for comprehension
like nothing ever seen or heard

Who can grasp your infinite wisdom
who can fathom the depth of your love
You are beautiful beyond description
     majesty enthroned above

I stand, I stand in awe of you
I stand, I stand in awe of you
Holy God to whom all praise is due
I stand in awe of you!

Abba Father, I ask that you fill this place with your glory and power. I ask that the words in my mouth would be yours. Let the words that you want me to say spring forth from my lips. Let nothing from my lips be flesh, but let it be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led. Work through me in Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's sermon is titled "Quiet Refuge". First, I want to define these two words. Quiet means to make no noise or silent. Refuge means safe place, shelter. So with these definitions my alternate title could be Silent Shelter.

As I sit here, it is quiet for the most part. I think of times in my life when everything around me wasn't so quiet. The years of abuse, peers teasing me, lawyers and police officers asking me questions before the court hearings, my mom's open heart surgery at 38 (I was 17), college, 9/11/2001, the months and days before our wedding day, being diagnosed with Bipolar.

All of these were not quiet times in my life. The world around me was loud, but during most of these my spirit, mind, and soul were quieted by my Father, my Friend. The One who said "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

I sometimes equate quiet with the stillness outside myself. I seem to miss the times when God's loving hand has come and quieted the storm in me. And now, I have to raise my head to Heaven, smile and scream "Thank you Jesus for calming the storm in me!"

I find it a blessing to know that there is a place where we can go for quiet refuge. A physical place-maybe your prayer room or prayer closet. But even more important is the quiet refuge that is Jesus in us, our spiritual place of refuge.

I found 18 plus verses in the Old Testament about Refuge. Sixteen or more of them are in the Book of Psalms. Let's look at a few of them.

Turn with me to 2 Samuel 22:1-4.

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

These verses get me thinking about the song that has the words of verse 4 in it. But, I won't sing it for you. Let's go deeper into the verses.

"The Lord is my rock"--->Remember Jesus is our Rock that won't move! Though storms come, He stands firm!

"The Lord is my fortress"--->Not only to go into for safety, BUT to do battle from as well!

"The Lord is my deliverer"--->The One who frees me from the eveil one! Hallelujah!

"He is my shield"--->Protector!

"He is the horn of my salvation"--->The One who pours Himself out for us. He is our source.

"He is my high tower"--->Again a safe place to run to for refuge!

"He is my refuge"--->My safe place!

"He is my savior"--->He saved me from my sins! Glory to God!

*Pause*

Now, let's look at some Psalms. Go with me to Psalm 46.

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

In this Psalm, the word refuge is used three times. From this Psalm we see that Father God, Creator of the whole universe and all that is in it, is our refuge and strength. He is our ever present help in trouble.
God is our place to run to when we need him. Isn't it amazing to you that the Creator comes to us as our refuge, our safe place? I am in awe of this and all I can say is thank you, Jesus!

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
God is our safe place, the One that gives us strength. When we are in trouble, He is there, helpung us.

2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Do not let the things of this world make you afraid. No matter what happens God is still there! He has not left you alone.

3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
Again...God is there! He hasn't left you. He is the faithful one, your quiet refuge.

4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
Glory to God! Can you not see the awesomeness of our God? How He comes to be with us? I am in awe of you, Jesus.

5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
I shall not be moved!

6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
Though everything around us may be moved...the earth still hears His voice.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
He has not left! Our quiet refuge is still here!

8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
See what God has done!

9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
Holy is He!

10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
"Be still and know that I am God"--->get to your quiet refuge. God is waiting for you! He will be exalted.

11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
This is the same as number 7! Does this say something to us? I believe so! Remember who is with us! Satan has no idea what to do with that! Oh sure, he tries, but he is deafeated! Father God, thank you for your quiet refuge!

Remember earlier when I talked about God quieting or stilling our minds, spirits, souls, and bodies? Verse 10 is the proof of that. "Be still" it says. Quiet your mind, soul, body, and spirit, and know that I am God. We can believe what he has said. His promises are true and trustworthy. He is our Faithful Friend.

Turn with me to Psalm 91.

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Refuge appears at least two times in this Psalm. One of my favorite verses from this Psalm is verse 4.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
I love the idea that he covers us with his feathers.

Like we did with Psalm 46, let's go through these verses one at a time.

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
'Secret Place'--->I believe we are talking about our quiet refuge...the place where we met God. Just Him and you.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Refuge--->safe place. Fortress--->Stronghold. In God We Trust!

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
Deliver--->Our Rescuer!

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Cover--->Protect, Shelter. Shield--->Protect. Buckler--->Protector.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Be not afraid of what the enemy. God has defeated him!

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
Be not afraid! Jehovah God is with you!

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
We are protected by God! Thank you, Jesus!

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Bless the Lord oh my soul!

9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
My quiet refuge is my shelter, the place I am safe from all that is around me. I hide in the secret place of my habitation, my shelter, my refuge!

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For God is for us...who can be against us?

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
Praise God! Protection from on High!

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Praise God for his servants!

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Satan is under our feet. Evil men, serpents, all evil things are under our feet!

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
Praise Jesus! Let us know your name Jesus!

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
Call upon Jesus and he will answer you. He will be with us in trouble. He will deliver us. Bless His holy Name!

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Bless the name of the Lord. Glory to his name!

*Pause*
